Zurich- and Paris-based office Kubota & Bachmann Architects has sent us images of their entry into the international design competition for the ‘Kaohsiung Maritime Cultural & Popular Music Center‘ in Taiwan. The new facility is an integral part of the major public investment and construction plan by the Kaohsiung City government. The colorful proposal made it on the stage 1 shortlist and received an Honorable Mention in the final stage 2 of this highly popular international competition.
The project features a dominant interplay of color and its sensorial connection to music. Consisting of clusters of cylindrical structures, the design is arranged on the coast of the river, connecting the harbor, ferry terminal, wharf and port market in its master plan. a bridge lit up to resemble a rainbow links the center to the kaohsiung beach, serving as a transitional promenade in between the two programs.
“She’s like a rainbow …..”
Color is joy, color is love and color is Pop…
Joy is the pleasure of living in front of the sea, strolling along the beach, walking on the port and visiting the Port Market, the ships that come and go, looking into the distance. Love is the meeting of two programs on a single site. It is the encounter of Kaohsiung Maritime Cultural and Popular Music Center. Pop is the new symbol of Kaohsiung’s port. A place accessible to all audiences. A place where people sing and dance. A new meeting place in the city of Kaohsiung. The Kaohsiung Maritime Cultural & Popular Music center is a composition of different programs and components. The arrangement forms a harmony of colors. “She comes in color everywhere like a rainbow.”
