Whether you are planning to install or repair your roof by yourself or through hiring a contractor, it would be good to estimate the amount of roofing materials that you would be needing to give you an idea of how much you would be spending on the project. For some, the process of calculating the materials you need for a roofing project can be challenging; however, through following some steps, you should be able to properly come up with a good estimate. Here are the steps that you can follow.

1. Using a tape measure, measure your roof by taking one measurement from the top of your roof to the eaves. Take another measurement from one end of your roof to the other end. You could then multiply the two measurements so you can get the square footage. For instance, a roof section which is 50 feet long by 30 feet high has an area of 1500 square feet.

2. Repeat this process for every section of your roof. If there are areas which are not of a rectangle or square shape, make use of the longest span for your calculations.

3. Add all the measurements you get and then add another 10 percent to the total square footage you get. The resulting figure would be your working number.

4. To determine the number of roofing squares that you would be needing, divide your working number by 100.

5. Be sure that you would be ordering the same number of felt underlayment for your roof as your roofing squares. For roofing nails, multiply the number of roofing squares you would be using by 350.

Once you figure out how much materials you need, you can then proceed to researching about shake roof pricing and cost or the pricing and cost of the particular type of roofing material or style that you would be using.
